Barbara lives on the south side of Hampstead Heath so this picture she took for us yesterday is of Hampstead Pond No. 1, the first pond you meet when you walk onto the heath from South End Green. To the right of the pond is a causeway which separates Pond No 1 from the Mixed bathing pond, closed of course now by COVID-19. And straight ahead is a small ‘Dog’s Bathing Beach’ although no dogs were indulging when she was there – just ducks!
Further south still in her own garden is another pond – if a somewhat smaller one, complete with fish….
And today, to get my allowed exercise, I walked south to Belsize Park to deliver some supplies to an elderly friend who is quarantined in her flat. While I was there I dropped by my old house at 5 Lawn Road and, more specifically, dropped into the garden of Troyes House, the small block of flats next door. And a super verdant garden it is – and awash in bird song!
Looking over the fence into my old garden also reminded me that the whole back of the garden would by now be covered with wild garlic. Here it was last year – but in mid to late April I think to be that much in flower.
No flowers s yet on Barbara’s, coralled into a pot, which is probably wise as it does spread like wildfire. Still, I wish I still had some…. I’ll have to climb over Matthew’s fence and steal a few bits from my old garden!
